Dragons

Dragons are a serpent type creature that has been the subject of legends and myth throughout many civilizations around the world. In the East, dragons have been thought of as keepers of gold and hidden knowledge. They are magical guardians, immortal oracles and sometimes gods, who give gifts and understanding while watching over mankind. One of the sought after gifts, is the white magic pearl that they would sometimes give to their visitors. The Eastern Dragons of the Orient are depicted as having long whiskers, a wise beard, straight or curly horns, tiger paws with eagle claws, a camel like head with cow ears, a bump on the head called a Chimu, and a torso of a snake with carp fish scales.

Chinese dragons typically do not have wings or breath fire. It is believed however that they make clouds with their breath.

While Asian dragons could live in the mountains in caves, most dragons are believed to live in rivers and oceans. In fact many rivers are named after dragons and are a symbol of dragons. Since dragons live in the water, they are attributed to bringing rain, thunder and lightning. They are all wise and powerful and are the protectors of mankind bringing them good fortune. They are teachers and companions of royalty and are believed to have more gold then any earthly king. If they so choose they can turn into humans with super powers, and can range in size from gigantic to worm small dependant on their mood and circumstances.

The Chinese believe that fish turn into dragons but in order to do so they have to break free from the water by having the strength to leap out of it. Since there are so many fish in the sea there are just as many dragons as people if not more.

The Dragon form the East was the most powerful and bravest of all the Chinese dragons. He represents the life giving light and energy of the sun and the universe. Making it the most majestic of all animals. Dragons are a symbol of the elements and are represented by the dragon constellation in the sky of the spring season. The spring season is marked by the moon rising into the sky with the dragon star following it. The moon is typically represented by the white pearl, which is why the dragons are usually shown following or chasing a pearl, marking the beginning of the Chinese New Year and the cycle of life.

When there are floods or droughts it is believed that the dragons are angry with mankind, usually because people have disrespected the dragons in some way. Dragons can be vain and so sometimes they will want to exact some revenge until they have been appeased. This sometimes can be accomplished through a dragon festival or ceremony.

However when dragons use to much force the people can complain to the Sky King who is over all the dragons and will prevent them from taking further revenge. The Sky Dragon is represented by the rolling clouds and is a seeker of deep contemplation and nobility.

Because dragons are noble they have been adopted as the imperial seal of authority. They identify the king as a god on the earth who has been chosen by the gods. He sits on the dragon throne and wears robes with dragons on them. Many Asian kings have traced their bloodline back to various dragons. Dragon are thought to bring good fortune, prosperity, and abundance. It is a sacred animal and is one of four divine creatures, which are: the dragon, unicorn, phoenix, and tortoise.

For China, the history of dragons goes back thousands of years - even before China existed as a nation. It is believed that Fuxi, the earliest ancestor of the Chinese nation traveled down the Yellow River basin and settled there. He was a descendent of a dragon and is believed to have had a human head and dragon body. He is now buried in Huaiyang, which is call the Dragon City because of him.
